The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mohammad Abubakar has revealed the Federal Government’s plans to end the problem of Nigerian produce rejection in the international market by introducing organic agriculture practice into the agricultural system.
Abubakar said the Ministry is focusing on unlocking the enormous potentials that abound in organic agriculture.
The ministry is currently looking at the adoption of organic agriculture for the sustainability of soil nutrients and fertility.
He said this in Abuja at the two-day National Dialogue on Organic Agriculture Policy for Nigeria organized by the ministry in collaboration with Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) Initiative Nigeria.
Represented by the Director, Federal Department of Land Resources, Shehu Bello, the minister said the government desires to sustain the country’s agricultural sector which has picked up as a result of some initiatives of the Ministry which include the provision of zero-interest inputs loans to smallholder farmers.
He said: “The agricultural sector is one of the key drivers of the economy, and a vibrant agricultural sector is needed to ensure job creation, adequate farm produce to meet the increasing demand for food and raw materials for agribusiness industries.
