Police officer faces jail for ordering porn on couple’s TV while guarding body of dead son

A metropolitan police officer faces a potential jail term ordering pornography on a couple’s TV while guarding the body of a dead child February last year.

PC Avi Maharaj, 44, used Graham and Alison Miller’s cable television account to purchase adult movies in the hours after the death of their 14-year-old son Harry at their £1.2m Wandsworth home in February last year.

PC Avi Maharaj, 44, used Graham and Alison Miller’s cable television account to purchase adult movies in the hours after the death of their 14-year-old son Harry at their £1.2m Wandsworth home in February last year.

Avi had been at the couple’s home watching pornography while he was guarding the corpse of their late son awaiting the Undertaker.

When the devout Christian couple received the Virgin TV bill and noticed four purchases for a total of £25.96, they initially feared their son had bought the videos himself before his death.

However, they alerted police and an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation concluded that the officer, based in Earlsfield, had made the purchases after guessing the PIN number to access the family’s cable account.

It also revealed that he may have later tried to falsify his attendance record at the family’s home to cover his tracks.

Maharaj pleaded guilty to fraud last month, and appeared in the dock dressed in a blue suit to be sentenced this morning.

But Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot sent the case to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court, deciding it was too serious for her to deal with and telling Maharaj he may face a prison sentence.

Maharaj was freed on unconditional bail until a sentencing hearing on a date to be set.
