The Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET) has urged farmers to adhere to climatic change information prescribed by the agency, to avoid crop failure.
It further said compliance with climate information would increase farmers’ yield and profit by more than 35 percent and minimize their risk.
NIMET Assistant General Manager of Climate Service, Oyegade Adeleke made this statement in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, at a workshop for stakeholders.
He said the onset date is the right time for plantation because there is enough water in the soil, adding that onset is when the soil moisture is okay and adequate for farmers to plant their seeds.
Sulaimon Arigbabu of Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) said his non-governmental organization (NGO), in conjunction with Oxfam, NiMet, and Panafrican Africa Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), trained farmers in the state on the need to consider climate change in their farming activities.
“Agriculture is evolving and it is based on science and knowledge. We cannot continue to do things the way our forefathers did it because things have changed and because we have more mouths to feed these days than in those days. These days we have less land to farm. Besides, our climate is changing daily and farmers need knowledge, otherwise, they will run into problems,” he said.
Partakers of the training applauded the organizers for the information shared with them.
