Nigeria partners China on transformer plant

President Muhammadu Buhari will perform the ground-breaking and foundation laying of the first Class Transformer Production Plant next month.

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) are both partners in the project in line with the Federal Government’s agenda for economic diversification.

The Chinese team, met with NASENI’s management in Abuja yesterday and was received by the agency’s Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Mohammed Haruna.

Haruna said the agreement was first signed in 2013, but the project could not take off. He noted that President Muhammadu Buhari had given a fresh directive concerning the three projects to take off in September.

According to him, over 50 percent of the 15 per cent counterpart fund had been paid by the Federal Government.

His words, “For any nation to have a steady power supply, it must have these three projects – Solar Cell Production Plant, High Voltage Testing Laboratory and Transformer Production Line. You cannot have a steady power supply when you import all components of electricity as obtained in Nigeria.”

Leader of the Chinese delegation and Chairman of Chinese Liaoning Huaye Group Development Ma Liming said Nigeria and China had a relationship, which led to the agreement on building the first transformer manufacturing plant in Nigeria.
