The Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has spoken of how the National Assembly will settle the dilemma of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
He insinuated that the lawmakers may exclude the direct primary clause before passing the bill into law when they reconvene next month.
According to Gbajabiamila, this is another option if the legislators cannot get the two-thirds majority votes needed to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s rejection of the Bill.
He mentioned the two options while responding to questions from reporters after commissioning some projects in his Surulere I Constituency in Lagos.
Recall that on December 20, Checkout Magazine reported President Muhammadu Buhari’s return of the Bill to the National Assembly, based on concerns about the inclusion of direct primary for political parties.
While acknowledging the calls from concerned stakeholders, Gbajabiamila said: “If you followed the history of the amendment of the direct and indirect primary bill, I initiated that amendment bill for a good reason and it is for people to participate in elections. These are the people you see around when you campaign every four years: come rain, come shine.”
