Lagos State Government is set to complete arrangements for the provision of shelter for domestic violence survivors, Checkout Magazine learnt.
This move is part of the government’s efforts to to eliminate domestic violence in Lagos State.
Speaking at a One-Day Seminar organised by Spotlight Initiative and implemented by Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, (WARDC) which was titled “High Level policy engagement in Sectoral action plan on ending violence against women and girls” held at Ikeja, Lagos, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Cecilia Bolaji-Dada said the State through the Ministry is giving prompt response to Gender Based Violence (GBV) reports on a daily basis.
Speaking of steps taken by the state to curb domestic violence, Bolaji-Dada said there are lots of synergy between the state, federal government and foreign donors concerning the tackling of GBV. “The Ministry recently collaborated with UNDP to give 35 domestic violence survivors livelihood support after 3 months training in different vocations while the second phase is on-going” said Dada who was represented by the Head Domestic Violence Unit, Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Olorunfemi.
The training according to the Executive Director, WARDC, Dr. Abiola Akiyode- Afolabi, was organised following the draft which was developed last year, and series of reviews have been organised to review the document and provide technical insight to strengthen the draft document.
“The validation meeting is organised to authenticate the document and adapt the multi-sectoral approach of GBV to be translated in adaptation of the implementation of multisectoral response mechanism to address violence against women and girls” said Afolabi.
