The Lagos State government has determined to enforce the ‘no test, no roadworthiness permit’ for the over three million vehicles and 300,000 commercial vehicles in the state.
According to the Director of Lagos State’s Vehicle Inspection Service, Engr Akin-George Fashola, the state is set to take off with the transport policy.
To do this, 26 computerized testing centers have been established to ensure precision in error detection.
Speaking to reporters on why the Lagos State government came up with the policy, Fashola said the department discovered that people bypassed the test after obtaining certificates.
So, the state has decided to exclude the real certificate from the validation sheet until the test is completed.
His words, “What we found out is that people don’t come for the test, so long as they have the certificate. So what we have done now is to simply remove the certificate from the validation sheet. So henceforth, when you now come to us that you want roadworthiness for your car, we would simply remove the real certificate, leaving you with the validation.
“ANPR, our automated number plate recognition cameras would recognize this for 30 days from the time you have come, the camera would recognize that you have a 30 days ultimatum, within that 30 days, you must come to any LACVIS center to have your vehicle checked if you pass we issue you a roadworthiness certificate, if you do not pass, you have another 30 days to go and fix whatever the issue is with your car.
“After those 30 days, if you do not do it, this validation expires and you are no longer protected. That means you can be fined.”
