Independence Day: Military display at Aso Villa marks low-key event

Some of the highlights of activities to mark Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary celebration yesterday included a display by the brigade of guards, cutting of cake and release of pigeons to symbolise peace.

The activities took place inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja in low-key celebrations, a reflection of the mood of the nation.

A broadcast yesterday morning by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aired on radio and television stations, Islamic prayers on Friday and Christian prayer on Sunday were the other activities to mark their anniversary.

The military event was presided over by President Tinubu as Special Guest of Honour.

He was supported by First Lady Oluremi, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Abbass Tajudeen and other top government officials.

Members of the diplomatic corps and military top brass also graced the ceremony.

The ceremony was the second Independence Day Anniversary celebration under President Tinubu’s leadership.
