Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for sanctioning the immediate prosecution of armed herdsmen and other criminals.
As a result, HURIWA urged the Ministry of Justice to comply with Buhari’s directive, adding that the police should also enforce the law by building up a strong case against all criminals.
The group advised that the prosecutorial activities must be transparent and accountable.
All criminals, Buhari said: “must be made to face the full weight of the law”.
The National Coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko while briefing reporters in Abuja on the development said, the impression conveyed by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami is that a set of suspects are above the law: “only because of their ethnicity”.
Onwubiko said that the perception is: “damaging to the image of the government. It is totally irregular, unconstitutional and absolutely illegal and we call on President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to order the AGF explicitly to either carry out the order to prosecute offenders or be dismissed from public office”.
