The Federal Government yesterday withdrew its earlier circular instructing vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors to reopen its universities.
It gave no reason for the u-turn contained in another circular by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
NUC is the body that supervises university education in the country.
The latest circular marked NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/136 and signed by NUC’s Director (Finance and Account) Sam Onazi, was addressed to all vice-chancellors; pro-chancellors, and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.
The statement partly reads, “ I have been directed to withdraw the NUC Circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135, and dated 23″ September 2022 on the above subject.
“Consequently, the said circular stands withdrawn. All pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils, as well as vice-chancellors of federal universities, are to please note. Further development and information would be communicated to all relevant stakeholders.”
The government issued the first circular dated September 26 as a step to enforce the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) order on university teachers to resume work.
