Parents have been warned a schoolgirl tested positive for coronavirus despite showing ‘no usual symptoms’.
A Plymouth school sent out an email to parents and staff to inform them the unnamed 10-year-old pupil had been diagnosed with Covid-19 after initial suspicions she was suffering from tonsilitis.
She is understood to have no underlying health problems and did not have a dry, persistent cough, though her temperature rose to 41.6C, causing convulsions.
Plymouth Live has seen the email – which has also been sent out to neighbouring schools – but has opted not to name the school in question.
The girl also has had red, mottled skin, ulcers in her throat, “severe” pain in her legs and an aching body.
The email adds: “The head teacher has spoken to her parents this morning and she is starting to be able to sit up and move around for short periods of time.
“Hopefully this is the beginning of her recovery. Antibiotics did not help with this virus and the parents have only been able to give her paracetamol. Please monitor your children and yourselves carefully for symptoms, stay at home and stay safe.”
Figures state there are currently 21 confirmed coronavirus cases in Plymouth, with five deaths across Devon. The number of coronavirus deaths in the UK has hit 465 after 43 more died in the last 24 hours, as of last night.
It also emerged yesterday that an additional 1,450 people have tested positive, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 9,529. A total of 97,019 people have been tested with 87,490 negative results.
Meanwhile, England’s death toll reached 414 tonight, as the number of deaths rose by 28. It comes as the death toll from Covid-19 rose to seven in Northern Ireland and Scotland’s death toll hit 22.
