A three-year-old West Virginia boy has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Nitro Police Chief, Bobby Eggleton said the child accidentally shot himself in the head Wednesday evening around 6:30pm at a residence in the 1300 block of Main Avenue.
He said it appears the boy’s father put the firearm down as he was getting ready to leave the home with it.
The boy then picked it up and accidentally fired one shot.
The child was pronounced dead at the Charleston Area Medical Center shortly after the incident.
Meanwhile, Eggleton urged gun owners to secure their weapons properly, especially if they have young children in the home.
“People have to be more careful,” he said.
Police have not released any names and say the shooting remains under investigation.
The final decision on possible charges will be made next week by the Kanawha County Attorney’s Office, Eggleton told reporters, according to WSAZ.
