Trump calls for lower interest rates

The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has called for lower interest rates, suggesting that such a move would align with upcoming tariffs.

In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump emphasised the need to reduce rates, linking the proposal to potential tariff increases.

“Interest rates should be lowered, something which would go hand in hand with upcoming tariffs,” he wrote.

In January, the Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady at a range of 4.25 per cent to 4.50 per cent, following three consecutive rate cuts in 2024.

Meanwhile, Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, as well as 25 per cent tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China.

The tariffs on Canada and Mexico were paused for a 30-day period
