Eid-al-Adha: Sacrifice key to nation building, says Tinubu

On Sunday, the 16th of June 2024, an atmosphere of tranquillity pervaded the country yesterday as Muslims marked Eid-al-Adha, the Islamic festival symbolising sacrifice and ultimate faith in the Almighty Allah.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of love, patriotism and sacrifice, particularly in this period of economic challenges.

The President, who observed the prayers at the Dodan Barracks Praying Ground, Obalende, Lagos, also called for charity towards the vulnerable in the spirit of the festival.

Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Suleiman Oluwatoyin Abou-Nolla, led worshippers to observe the two Rakat prayers and other activities marking the ceremony, including the symbolic slaughtering of the ram.

The President arrived at the venue at 8:55 am, barely five minutes before the commencement of prayers.

With the President were the National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu, Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, Senators Olugbenga Ashafa and Musiliu Obanikoro.

Others are Minister of State (Defence) BelloMatawalle; Lagos State Speaker Mudashiru Obasa; Business mogul Aliko Dangote and Principal Private Secreatary to the President Hakeem Muri-Okunola, among others.

After the prayers, the President said: “We have been told by the Chief Imam how we can follow the path of sacrifice.

The sacrifice required of a good citizen. Citizenship comes with responsibilities. As citizens, what do we need to do to be committed members of our society?

“Yes, that is sacrifice; loving your country. Loving your neighbours. Sharing what you have with each other. And to always be thankful to Almighty God.”
