IAAF strips U.S based Nigerian athlete of African Games medals

The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), yesterday stripped United States-based female shot put thrower, Oyesade Olatoye of the two medals she won at the 2019 African Games in Morocco for being ineligible to represent Nigeria in the competition.

In a statement issued by the IAAF, it was disclosed that the Ohio State athlete, who won gold in the women’s shot put and a bronze medal in the women hammer throw was not cleared by its Nationality Review Panel before she competed for Nigeria.

It read, “In reference to the transfer of allegiance for Oyesade Olatoye, the final decision of the NRP has determined that the athlete was not eligible to represent Nigeria at the time of the 2019 African Games and that her results there have to be annulled,”

She had competed for the United States as a junior athlete and had to engage a lawyer to facilitate her clearance alongside her father.

Although, Olatoye was not cleared for the African Games at the time of the championship, she was however cleared for the Doha 2019 World Championships. She is now free to compete for Nigeria.
