Environmental Abuse: LAWMA shuts down Sangotedo Market

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has put to stop commercial activities at the Sangotedo Market, Eti Osa, citing the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and poor hygiene practices by traders in the market as a reason for its action.

The Director, Public Affairs, LAWMA, Mrs Folashade Kadiri, in a Press Release issued by the agency, disclosed that unhygienic activities of traders prevented government’s efforts at restoring environmental sanity in the area.

She noted that the traders consistently violated environmental laws and refused to patronize assigned PSP operators, quoting the Governor’s Executive Order on traffic and sanitation matters, which emphasized the State government’s zero tolerance for environmental abuse, including illegal and indiscriminate dumping of refuse as well as defacing of the environment.

Mrs Kadiri observed that the agency’s management is doing its best to rid the State of waste, which necessitated the introduction of “Lagos at 4 a.m” operation and other laudable initiatives aimed at restoring environmental integrity in the State.

She further said that the authority had strongly warned of severe sanctions, including further closure of markets for those who indulge in indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads.

It urged residents to support the State government’s quest to establish a sustainable and livable environment that would be the pride of everyone, stressing the need to shun indiscriminate waste disposal through the patronage of assigned PSP operators.

The statement also encouraged all residents to call toll-free lines 617, 07080601020 or send a direct message via Twitter @lawma_gov for complaints and inquiries on the activities of the Authority.

It would be recalled that in February 2019, LAWMA warned traders at Ladipo ultra-modern market in Mushin that it would shut the complex down due to poor waste management practices. However, LAWMA cancelled the plan after the traders heeded the warning.
