2023: e-transmission of election results uncertain

It has been gathered that the eectronic transmission of results for the 2023 general election may no longer be feasible.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is said to be preparing for the election on an existing legal framework.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari failed to assent to the Electoral Bill that made provision for e-transmission of the 2023 election results.

Therefore, the existing legal framework which the commission has fallen back on following the delay in assenting to the new Electoral Bill, has no provision for e-transmission of results.

The commission has however, promised to continue to rely on the old law to deliver credible elections that would meet the expectations of Nigerians.

Also, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, has stated that “a good electoral legal framework is one of the fundamental prerequisites for a good election”.

He added: “The commission is preparing for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections based on the existing law and the commission is preparing for the 2023 general election based on the existing law.

“The commission will continue to rely on and deploy on the basis of the existing law to deliver good elections that meet the expectations of the Nigerian people. A new Electoral Act or an Amended Electoral Act that builds on lessons learnt and makes adjustments on areas of weakness will strengthen the existing legal framework and plug a few loopholes in the system.”
